Wrigley Field WRIGLEY FIELD
Date: 19-45
Photographer: Unknown
About this image: Built in 1914 and designated a Chicago landmark in 2004, Wrigley Field is home to the Chicago Cubs. Although the stadium has undergone a series of transformations over the years, it still retains its ivied walls and manual scoreboard (both added in 1937) and didn’t get wired for night games until 1988 - the last major league ballpark in the country to do so. This 1945 image shows the stadium decked out in World Series bunting with crowds gathering to purchase tickets for Game 7, the final game of the season. The Detroit Tigers would take the pennant that year, defeating the Cubs 9-3. Sports legends have made history here, including Babe Ruth’s alleged “called shot” during the 1932 World Series, Gabby Hartnett’s “Homer in Gloamin,” which clinched the 1938 National League pennant for the Cubs, and Ernie Banks’ 500th career homerun in 1970. As the oldest surviving National League ballpark, Wrigley Field remains a cherished gem not only for Chicagoans and Cubs fans, but for baseball enthusiasts worldwide.
